Understanding the Difference Between Tags and Groups

How to use tags vs groups when organizing volunteers in Timecounts.

Updated over a week ago

The Groups feature is available on the Pro Plan.

Grouping people might seem straightforward, but in Timecounts, Groups, and Tags serve different purposes. Let’s break it down:

  • Tags: If you want to organize your volunteers to quickly identify, filter, or message them later, Tags are what you need. They’re a simple and flexible way to associate volunteers with specific attributes or characteristics (e.g., “superstar volunteers”).

  • Groups: On the other hand, Groups are designed for scheduling, particularly when dealing with companies, friends, or families who want to volunteer together. If, for example, a company like Central Bank is bringing a large group to volunteer, you can create a Group for them. This allows you to assign or reserve a set number of spots for the group on a shift or event without needing the individual names of everyone attending.
