Creating, editing, and removing tags

Use tags to better organize your volunteers activity and status.

Updated over a month ago

An overview of tags and how to use them.

Tags help you organize volunteers in the directory. They’re perfect for highlighting superstar volunteers, filtering lists, or sending targeted messages. Only your organization’s admins can see and edit these tags.

Here are some popular ways to use tags:

  • Bulk actions: Filter by tags to qualify applications, move volunteers to inactive status, export data, or delete multiple entries at once.

  • Messaging: Use tags (or combinations of tags) to filter your list, select all, and click Message in the toolbar.

  • Quick messaging: When crafting a new message, choose Segments to reach people with a specific tag quickly.

  • Saved searches: Utilize the Saved Search feature in the Directory to filter based on specific tag combinations or other criteria.

All plans offer unlimited tags. To keep things organized, use only what you need and delete unused tags.

Managing tags.

To make changes to your tags, head to Settings > Tags in the main navigation on the left.

  • To add a new tag, click the Add New button in the top right corner.

  • To delete a tag, click the trash icon.

  • To update a tag’s name, use the edit pencil icon next to it.

Note: The count in brackets next to each tag shows how many people are currently listed in the Directory. If a tag is associated with someone in the Onboarding or Inactive views, you can open their profile card to view that information.

Tagging volunteers from the directory.

  1. In the Directory > Volunteers view, select the checkbox next to each volunteer you want to tag or use Select All.

  2. Click the Tag button in the toolbar to open the tags popup.

  3. Choose an existing tag from the list or type a name to create a new one. Click Tag to apply it to everyone selected.

  4. To remove tags in bulk, follow the exact instructions but switch the toggle in the tags popup to Remove Tag.

Note: If newly applied tags are not visible right away, refresh the page.

Tagging a volunteer from the profile card.

On a volunteer’s profile card, you can view their existing tags or add new ones by selecting the + button and choosing from the tags list. To remove a tag, hover over the tag in the profile card and click the X to unlink it. Alternatively, you can switch to Remove Tag in the popup and select the tag you wish to delete from the volunteer's profile.

Search for tagged volunteers.

To find volunteers with specific tags, go to the Directory and click on Filter. Then, look for the Tags option in the filter settings. Once you see it, use the dropdown menu to select the tag you want to include in your search.

If you’d like to exclude specific volunteers, simply use the Tag: is not filter option. This lets you refine your search further, helping you focus on exactly who you need. You can use the Select All checkbox to take additional action, such as sending a message or exporting.

How do I export a list of my tags?

There is no direct way to export a list of your tags. However, you can export the people associated with a specific tag by applying a filter in the Directory.
